100 Word Review – The Goonies (1985)

Hey you guys! 

I watched this for the first time last night and was blown away!

Set in a time before parents worried about their children disappearing on bikes into the sunset, a groups of kids (Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Jonathan Ke Quan) seek a pirates treasure while being pursued by escaped criminals.

Screenplay by Chris Columbus (Gremlins), directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) with Steven Spielberg responsible for the story, it’s everything you’d hope for from an 80’s family action adventure film.

You’ll laugh, jump and quote it for days!

100 Word Review – All About Eve (1950)

A magnificent example of classic Hollywood.

Star Margo Channing (Bette Davis) believes that ingenue Eve (Anne Baxter) is trying to climb Hollywood’s career ladder by using her as a stepping stone.

It’s a truly twisted tale of deception, ambition and betrayal.

Witten and directed by Joseph L Mankiewicz (Cleopatra, Guys and Dolls), this film has won six Oscars including Best Directing and Best Screenplay and was nominated for a further eight. It even beat Sunset Boulevard for Best Picture and holds the record for the greatest number of female action Oscar nominations. It is currently number 100 on IMDb’s Top 250 films.

100 Word Review – Last Action Hero (1993)

Arnie’s back.

Danny (Austin O’Brien) is a young boy with a big imagination, obsessed with his favourite action hero Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). When he is given a ticket to the latest Slater flick he jumps at the chance, little suspecting that he might become part of the action…

Co-staring the magnetic Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones), this is lighter and more comedic than a lot of Arnie’s ouevre, but doesn’t quite fit in to his family-friendly-range (see Junior or Twins). It’s a joy to watch, full of the ridiculous one-liners and explosions we’ve come to expect.

100 Word Review – Blackfish (2013)

In 2010, Dawn Brancheau, a senior trainer at SeaWorld, died in an orca tank.

Her body was recovered drowned, scalped and dismembered.

This is the first documentary written and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and examines the true cost of orca captivity. Focusing on the actions of SeaWorld, much of the narrative is built around Tilikum, SeaWorld’s infamous bull orca who is known to be responsible for two trainer deaths.Tilikum in a scene from

Complete with interviews with previous trainers at SeaWorld, as well as experts in natural orca behaviour and eye-witnesses, archive footage and courtroom transcripts, they construct an argument almost impossible to argue with.

100 Word Review – 22 Jump Street (2014)

They’re back, and this time they’re going to College.

The sequel to 21 Jump Street, this time Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are masquerading as college students to bring down a drug ring.

Don’t panic if you think this sounds awfully familiar, the fact that the basic plot is almost exactly the same as the first film does not go unmentioned. Very cleverly written, the feature is magnificently meta, breaking down every fourth wall that comes in its path.

Whether you are in it for the action, the gross-out humour, the wit or just Channing Tatum, you’ll love it.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

When I was at secondary school I had to write an essay for English about whether Romeo and Juliet were “victims of Fate or their own foolishness”.

For some reason that phrase always comes to mind when I watch Baz Luhrmann’s (The Great Gatsby, Strictly Ballroom) interpretation of Shakespeare’s play. There are, of course, arguments both ways.

For those of you who have managed to, somehow, miss this story of woe here’s a brief summary. 6a01543409ba67970c01a511aaf4ac970c

Romeo Montague (Leonardo DiCaprio) is love sick  until his best friends persuade him to attend a masquerade party where he meets Juliet (Clare Danes). Unfortunately, Juliet is a Capulet, the sworn enemies of the Montagues, and the party is celebrating her engagement to Paris (Paul Rudd). Then Tybalt (John Leguizamo), Mercutio (Harold Perrineau) and a friar (Pete Postlethwaite) all get involved and people start dying.

Lurhmann takes this story, places it firmly in the modern day while leaving Shakespeare’s prose untouched. Obviously this alters meanings, but for the most part it leaves the Bard’s work reasonably unscathed. At least more so than some modern “reimagining”s. I’m looking at you Gnomeo and Juliet.

This, I imag2016think, is what pushes that essay title to the front of my mind. Luhrmann’s adaptation shines lights on both angles.

If we consider Fate to be synonymous with religious deity, this film is marinated in it. Every possible religious aspect of this feature is highlighted in gaudy neon. There is no doubting the role that Fate plays in the lives of the citizens of this fictitious Verona. Or at least the importance they place on it. As you can see from the photo on the left, it is not subtle.

So it makes sense. These two young fools fall in love, and Fate punishes them for going against the wishes of their family.

Ot does it make sense? They are clearly idealists and Romantics (the capital R again!). They are also teenagers. Baby-faced DiCaprio demonstrates this perfectly during his first scene when he is mourning the loss of the beautiful Rosaline as a love interest. And what happens next? His friends take him to party where he gets drunk (and high) and promptly forgets the supposed love of his life.

Poor Rosaline is replaced by the youthfully innocent face of Juliet who spends much of the film dressed like an angel. Is this more religious imagery (Romeo defiled an angel and now he must pay), foreshadowing of a future not yet written or a demonstration of her naivety? Perhaps all three or a combination of them.

As if this wasn’t proof enough, Romeo then breaks in to the back garden of his beloved and romps around in her swimming pool to avoid being caught by her father (that sentence was meant as an innuendo). These are not the actions of a sophisticated romantic, slighted by circumstance. This is a drunk teenager.

But whatever you think. Whether you think they are the epitome of romance or merely a pair of excitable teens this is still a story that transcends time and place, and this adaptation is testament to that. It was nominated for an Oscar for its art direction, and as always with Luhrmann, the visuals are striking. Watch out for his signature billboard.

100 Word Review – RED (2010)

Finally! An action film that proves youth and gender aren’t everything!

A former Black-Ops agent (Bruce Willis) comes out of retirement when he is forced back into the field. Marked by the Government as Retired Extremely Dangerous he’s going to need a little help from his friends.

Cue Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman. Seriously, what film can boast a better cast?

Admittedly, as with most action films, a lot of it’s unbelievable. But it is so much fun. If you want a cerebral drama, then look elsewhere, but if you want exploding cars, you’re in the right place.

100 Word Review – The Matrix (1999)

Currently sitting at 18 on the IMDb Top 250 list, it’s no exaggeration to say that this film was ground-breaking.

Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a computer hacker who is approached by a group of rebels (Carrie-Anne Moss, Lawrence Fishburne) intent on convincing him the world he knows may not be as it appears.

Writing and directing team the Wachowskis (V For Vendetta, Cloud Atlas) spent an $80 million making this the masterpiece that they envisioned and, considering they won four Oscars for the special effects, editing and sound, it was money well spent.

It’s the classic Sci Fi action that you can’t miss!

100 Word Review – Attila Marcel (2013)

This was one of my unexpected gems from Bath Film Festival 2014.

Paul (Guillaume Gouix) is a mute. Living with his two over-bearing aunts, it is not until an accidental meeting with Mme Proust (Anne Le Ny) that takes him on a psychedelic psychological journey through his repressed childhood.

Written and directed by Sylvain Chomet (Belleville Rendezvous, The Illusionist), this is his foray into live-action, bringing all the creative visuals he is known for to a new medium. It is full of the charm, wit and philosophy you would expect, with such beautiful scene composition you cannot help but feel transported.

Never Seen … My Neighbour Totoro (1988)

About a month ago, I set Callum Dunbar the challenge of watching My Neighbour Totoro, a wonderful family-friendly Japanese animation that has become a cult classic, which he had never seen before. Here’s the conversation we had after he’d watched it.

*WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Elspeth H (EH): So today we’re talking about My Neighbour Totoro, the Studio Ghibli classic from 1988. Am I right in thinking you hadn’t heard of Studio Ghibli before?

Callum Dunbar (CD): That’s correct. My cultural knowledge is fairly crap when it comes to Japanese films.

EH: So you hadn’t seen any Japanese films before?

CD: Nope. Nothing. The only Japanese anime I’ve ever seen is Pokemon. If you can call that…

EH: That counts.

CD: My expectations were not very high.

EH: In what way? In terms of the complexity of the animation?

CD: Yes, in terms of the animation I had extremely low expectations.

EH: What was it you were excepting?

CD: I was expecting a Japanese fairytale. A magical Japanese fairytale.

EH: And was it what you were expecting?

CD: Not at all. It was something far more complex and subtle than a fairytale. I guess it was more real and more hopeful than a fairytale as well.

EH: You found it hopeful at the end?

CD Yes, I did. It wasn’t just saying … there was no really hero, which I liked. There was no male character saving a helpless female life.

EH: Which is always refreshing to see.

CD: Which is why Frozen is such a great film because it breaks out of all those kind of tropes which I like.

EH: I guess there are similarities to Frozen, actually, in that there are two sisters and it’s about the elements and nature and the power of those things.

CD: Yes, I agree. And it has an interesting narrative as well. It’s exploratory in a way that other Disney films and other fairytales aren’t. It was far less of a fable. It wasn’t trying to teach me something, it was trying to ask me things which I think is good for children. But it’s equally entertaining for adults.

EH: I was going to ask, you watched it with your daughter didn’t you?

CD: I did.

EH: And how old is she?

CD: Olivia’s just six.

EH: What did she think of it?

CD: She loved it. In fact as soon as the film ended she asked me to restart it for her. She’s never done that before. it’s quite something. To get Olivia to sit still and do anything is a miracle.

EH: What was it she enjoyed about it do you think? Did she empathise with the children or was it the magic of the whole thing?

CD: Yeah, I think the fact it was a young girl. I think she liked Totoro. Actually I know she liked Totoro.

EH: You can get a Totoro onesie by the way, just if you’re thinking birthdays or Christmas…

CD: I think that’s it. I can’t speak for her but I think she liked the imagery, like the cat bus. We both liked that as fans of Alice in Wonderland.

EH: Admittedly I was much older than six when I watched My Neighbour Totoro for the first time, but I still found the cat bus kind of creepy and scary. But she didn’t find that?

CD: No, I don’t think so. But even if she did find it creepy, I think creepy is a good thing. It’s one of those films that expands the way you see things, which I really like. I really liked that. And maybe she was too young to get that but I think it was a good experience for her to watch it. It is exploratory in the art work and so on.

EH: There’s a fair amount of darkness in it as well. There are some really harsh and scary moments.

CD: At the same time, it’s not dragons, it’s real world darkness.

EH: So as you watched it with Olivia, I’m guessing you watched the dubbed rather than the subtitled version?

CD: Yes, the Disney release.

EH: I would recommend watching it by yourself with the subtitles instead. There is definitely a difference. Would you recommend it?

CD. Yes. And I’m not someone who watches films. Definitely watch it with a child as well. I should have asked Olivia what she thought because her reaction was very interesting. There must have been something in it that held her attention which, apart from the obvious ones like Frozen, I’ve not seen her do before.

EH: I’ve heard of other children reacting to it in a similar way. Identifying with the two sisters. I think that kind of childish madness is quite universal.

CD: Absolutely. And imagination. You know it touches on themes of your parents blaming things on your imagination, which I think is something all children can relate to. But it celebrates that as well. In the same way that Roald Dahl’s Matilda does that. And I know Olivia likes that too.

EH: So did it meet all your expectations? How did it stack up?

CD: It exceeded them by a long way.

EH: You like the animation style?

CD: I loved it. I thought the art work was beautiful. I thought the colours were beautiful. I thought the setting was beautiful as well. I just loved it.

EH: So have I created a Ghibli fan?

CD: I think so. I’d definitely watch more Ghibli.

EH: Would you be interested in watching some of the more grown up films? The wonderful thing about Ghibli is it covers quite a wide spectrum, unlike Disney which sticks to children’s films.

CD: I definitely think I would. I like to try all things and I felt like I got something new from that film. Yes. 100%.

EH: Fantastic. Any favourite moments?

CD: The cat bus.

EH: I rather like the dust mites. You know when you walk in to a room and it feels a bit like a lot of dust mites disappearing into corners and cracks?

CD: I like the … it’s hard to explain… I like the narrative and that it wasn’t a cause and effect narrative. So at the end when the girls left the corn on the window sill and the fact that the film didn’t end with them all visiting the mother in hospital. I really liked those things, it wasn’t obvious. And there’s the scene were they find the child’s shoe floating in the pond. It cranks up the tension, is this the younger sister’s shoe? and it’s not. And it just leaves it there. I loved it.

EH: Marks out of 5?

CD: Five. Better than Ghostbusters.
